At the heart of Redeemer’s University, Ede, lies a firm belief that education is the most powerful tool for breaking the cycle of poverty. In line with the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goal 1 (No Poverty), the university has established a range of scholarships, welfare programmes, and entrepreneurial initiatives designed to empower students from financially challenged backgrounds, ensuring that no capable mind is left behind because of economic hardship.

Scholarships and Grants for Students from Low-Income Households

Redeemer’s University actively targets the inclusion of students who fall within the bottom 20% of household income groups in Nigeria by offering both merit- and need-based financial aid. Through the Redeemer’s University Scholarship and Financial Aid Scheme, the institution provides tuition waivers, bursaries, and subsidised fees to academically gifted students who demonstrate financial hardship.

The Vice Chancellor’s Scholarship for Academic Excellence and the Redeemed Christian Church of God (RCCG) General Overseer’s Scholarship Fund are among the flagship programmes that have enabled hundreds of students to access quality higher education without the burden of tuition debt. In addition, faculty-based awards and endowed funds from alumni and friends of the university continue to expand opportunities for economically disadvantaged students across disciplines.

Support Services: Food, Housing, and Essential Needs

Recognising that poverty extends beyond tuition, Redeemer’s University also provides subsidised housing and meal plans for students in need. On-campus accommodation offers affordable living spaces, while the university cafeteria system ensures low-cost, nutritionally balanced meals, with occasional free meal initiatives sponsored by alumni groups and faith-based partners.

Beyond food and shelter, the Students’ Welfare Scheme operates as a community-funded platform that mobilises contributions from staff, alumni, and donors to assist students facing sudden financial distress, whether due to family loss, health emergencies, or inability to pay final-year fees. This initiative has already helped multiple students graduate who otherwise would have dropped out for financial reasons.

Entrepreneurship and Skills Development: Building Financial Resilience

Through the Centre for Entrepreneurial Development Studies (RUNCEDS), Redeemer’s University has institutionalised entrepreneurship as a compulsory part of its curriculum. Every undergraduate participates in hands-on training and business development workshops, covering skills such as digital marketing, agribusiness, creative crafts, and small-scale manufacturing.

The goal is simple but transformative: to enable students, especially those from low-income backgrounds, to generate income while studying and to graduate as job creators rather than job seekers. Annual exhibitions, such as the Entrepreneurial Skills Fair, give students the opportunity to pitch innovations and attract investors. These efforts not only ease financial constraints during their studies but also promote long-term economic sustainability among graduates.

Alumni and Community Support: A Lifeline Beyond the Classroom

The Redeemer’s University Alumni Association has become an active partner in sustaining low-income student support systems. Through mentoring programmes, internship placements, and financial donations to the Students’ Welfare Fund, alumni are ensuring that current students from disadvantaged backgrounds can overcome barriers to graduation.

In addition, partnerships between the Career Services Centre, the RCCG Youth Affairs Department, and professional organisations such as the Chartered Institute of Personnel Management (CIPM) provide free career seminars and employability training, bridging the gap between education and sustainable livelihoods.

International Support for Students from Low and Lower-Middle Income Countries

As a globally conscious institution, Redeemer’s University extends its commitment to inclusivity beyond national borders. Through partnerships with international research programmes, notably the African Centre of Excellence for Genomics of Infectious Diseases (ACEGID) and the African Centre of Excellence for Water and Environmental Research (ACEWATER), the university offers fully funded and partially funded postgraduate opportunities to students from other African nations.

These scholarships, funded by the World Bank and other development partners, cover tuition, accommodation, and research stipends, enabling scholars from low and lower-middle income countries to pursue advanced education and contribute to regional development.

Sustainability and Impact

All these initiatives demonstrate Redeemer’s University’s holistic approach to fighting poverty through education, not merely by providing financial aid, but by fostering independence, employability, and resilience. From scholarships and subsidised living to entrepreneurial empowerment and alumni mentorship, the institution’s layered support system ensures that students from low-income backgrounds are not only admitted but also supported to successfully complete their studies.

Through these concerted efforts, Redeemer’s University continues to uphold its mission of transforming lives and communities, one student at a time.
