SDG 3 - Good health and well-being
Introduction
At Redeemer's University, our mission for Sustainable Development Goal 3: Good Health and Well-being is to improve the health and quality of life of individuals both within and beyond our community. We are deeply committed to advancing global health, with a particular focus on addressing pressing health challenges through education, research, and community service. Our efforts aim to promote holistic well-being, from tackling infectious diseases to providing mental health support and access to essential healthcare.
Redeemer's University is home to a team of dedicated researchers who specialize in SDG 3, particularly in the area of infectious diseases. Our research addresses the prevention, control, and treatment of diseases that disproportionately affect African populations. In collaboration with national and international health institutions, we are at the forefront of developing innovative solutions to combat health crises, contributing to both local and global health systems.
Beyond research, we are actively engaged in health outreach programs, bringing essential healthcare services to underserved communities. These programs offer free medical services, health education, and preventive care, addressing key health challenges like maternal and child health, vaccination, and disease prevention. In recognition of the growing importance of mental health, Redeemer's University provides mental health support services for students, staff, and the wider community. We offer counseling, awareness campaigns, and resources that promote emotional well-being, creating a supportive environment for all. Our comprehensive approach to health ensures that we contribute meaningfully to the Good Health and Well-being of our community, the nation, and the world.

The article provides a comprehensive review of the current vaccine solutions for Ebola Virus Disease (EVD), highlighting the role of vaccines in reducing mortality rates and controlling outbreaks, particularly in West and Central Africa. It underscores the development and approval of key vaccines like Merck's Ervebo and Johnson & Johnson's Zabdeno/Mvabea, which have been pivotal in addressing the Ebola crisis. This progress aligns with Sustainable Development Goal 3 (SDG 3), which promotes good health and well-being for all by combating epidemics and improving access to vaccines in vulnerable regions. By fostering the development of safe and effective vaccines, international efforts contribute to achieving SDG 3 by ensuring healthier lives and stronger epidemic preparedness. The article presents a mathematical model to analyze malaria transmission dynamics, emphasizing partial immunity and the protection of travelers in malaria-endemic regions. The study explores various intervention strategies, such as the use of insecticide-treated nets (ITNs), indoor residual spraying (IRS), prophylaxis, and treatment, highlighting the importance of combining multiple strategies to reduce malaria infections and associated costs effectively. This aligns with the objectives of Sustainable Development Goal 3 (SDG 3), which seeks to ensure healthy lives and promote well-being for all by combating malaria and other diseases. By utilizing optimal control strategies, the study contributes to the fulfillment of SDG 3 by providing insights into the most cost-effective measures to reduce malaria transmission, especially in vulnerable populations. For more details, you can explore the full article by Olaniyi et al. (2020) in the Journal of Biological Dynamics

The article details how genomic surveillance has played a crucial role in managing the COVID-19 pandemic in Africa, focusing on the genetic sequencing of the SARS-CoV-2 virus. It highlights the importance of monitoring virus mutations and variants, such as the B.1.351 strain, which have affected transmission and vaccine efficacy. This effort underscores a strong commitment to achieving Sustainable Development Goal 3 (SDG 3), which promotes health and well-being by improving epidemic preparedness and ensuring timely responses to health threats. The study emphasizes that enhanced surveillance, especially in resource-limited settings, is essential for controlling pandemics and mitigating their impact on public health. The article discusses the creation of a pan-African pathogen genomics data-sharing platform aimed at supporting rapid responses to disease outbreaks like COVID-19, Ebola, and mpox. This initiative is crucial for Sustainable Development Goal 3 (SDG 3), which focuses on ensuring healthy lives and promoting well-being for all. By enhancing genomic surveillance and data-sharing across Africa, the platform strengthens the continent's ability to detect, monitor, and respond to infectious diseases in real-time. This initiative not only improves public health outcomes but also addresses challenges in data management and equity, ensuring that African countries are better prepared for future health threats.
