SDG 16 - Peace, Justice and Strong Institutions

Introduction

At Redeemer's University, our mission for Sustainable Development Goal 16: Peace, Justice, and Strong Institutions is to promote inclusive governance, uphold justice, and strengthen institutions. Our committed researchers focus on the development of fair, transparent systems and peaceful societies.

We engage students through the Students’ Union, encouraging active participation in leadership. We also identify and engage local stakeholders in community projects and provide expert advice to the government. Our faculty contributes to government research and offers a neutral platform to discuss important societal issues, fostering dialogue and collaboration for sustainable peace and justice.

The article titled "Nigeria is Fighting Covid-419: A Multimodal Critical Discourse Analysis of Political Protest in Nigerian Internet Memes" explores the use of internet memes during the COVID-19 pandemic to protest against corruption, government deceit, and inadequate public services. These memes became a creative outlet for expressing public dissatisfaction with the government's handling of the crisis, particularly regarding health services and social justice. This study highlights the importance of transparency, accountability, and justice, directly aligning with Sustainable Development Goal 16 (SDG 16), which advocates for peace, justice, and strong institutions. The article addresses the rising xenophobic attacks and human rights violations in South Africa, highlighting the need for a human rights-based approach to combat these issues. It examines the legal frameworks and international conventions aimed at protecting the rights of foreign nationals, emphasizing the role of the South African government in ensuring the dignity, safety, and protection of all individuals. This aligns with Sustainable Development Goal 16 (SDG 16), which promotes peace, justice, and strong institutions by calling for effective governance and respect for human rights. The article assesses the implementation of international and regional standards for combating human trafficking in West Africa, particularly through the lens of Nigeria, Ghana, and Senegal. It highlights how human trafficking remains a significant issue despite the ratification of frameworks like the Palermo Protocol. The study calls for stronger enforcement of anti-trafficking laws and emphasizes the need for collaborative governance to protect vulnerable populations, such as women and children. This work aligns with Sustainable Development Goal 16 (SDG 16), which focuses on promoting peace, justice, and strong institutions by reducing exploitation and strengthening legal mechanisms.
