Policy Statement

Redeemer’s University, Ede, is firmly committed to ensuring that food from aquatic ecosystems including fish, crustaceans, and other seafood products consumed on campus, is sustainably harvested. This commitment reflects the institution’s dedication to protecting marine and freshwater biodiversity, supporting responsible supply chains, and encouraging environmentally sound consumption habits across all food service operations.




Purpose

The purpose of this policy is to ensure that all food on campus that comes from aquatic ecosystems, whether sourced internally, through vendors, or via outsourced catering services, is obtained in a manner that:

  1. Promotes sustainable fisheries and aquaculture practices.
  2. Protects aquatic ecosystems from overexploitation, habitat loss, and pollution.
  3. Upholds ethical labour standards across the seafood supply chain.
  4. Encourages conservation awareness among staff, students, and suppliers.



Scope

This policy applies to:

  1. All campus food outlets, dining halls, and catering services.
  2. Procurement departments involved in sourcing seafood and aquatic-based ingredients.
  3. External suppliers and contractors providing food products or catering services to the university.
  4. Research and academic units (such as ACEWATER and the Department of Biological Sciences) contributing to sustainable aquatic management and education.



Policy Guidelines

  1. Sustainable Sourcing Requirements

    • All aquatic-based foods purchased or served on campus must be sourced from suppliers that comply with recognized sustainable fisheries and aquaculture standards.
    • Preference will be given to local suppliers and fisheries that demonstrate responsible harvesting practices, including seasonal catch limits, habitat protection, and avoidance of endangered species.
  2. Supplier Compliance

    • Vendors and contractors are required to submit documentation or certifications confirming that aquatic products are sustainably harvested.
    • The university’s procurement unit, in collaboration with the Centre for Ethics and Sustainability, will conduct periodic assessments to verify supplier compliance.
  3. Education and Awareness

    • Through partnerships with ACEWATER and the Department of Biological Sciences, Redeemer’s University promotes awareness about the importance of sustainable seafood consumption.
    • Students and staff are encouraged to participate in seminars, campaigns, and community outreach programs on freshwater conservation and responsible fisheries management.
  4. Monitoring and Evaluation

    • The Directorate of Academic Planning and Quality Assurance (DAPQA) will oversee the periodic review of this policy to ensure continued relevance and effectiveness.
    • Reports will be submitted annually to document compliance and continuous improvement.
  5. Evidence of Implementation

    • The university’s catering services prioritize seafood options sourced through sustainable means.
    • Educational programs under ACEWATER and related departments support local communities in freshwater management and sustainable aquaculture practices.
    • Outreach and public engagement activities highlight Redeemer’s University’s commitment to promoting conservation and sustainable utilisation of aquatic resources.
