Redeemer’s University Leads Efforts to Reduce Plastic Waste and Protect Water Ecosystems
Redeemer’s University, Ede, is taking measurable steps to curb plastic pollution and protect aquatic ecosystems through a coordinated campus-wide waste reduction effort. The university has launched a comprehensive action framework that targets the elimination of single-use plastics and promotes environmentally responsible practices across all levels of operation.
Driven by findings from the Africa Centre of Excellence for Water and Environmental Research (ACEWATER), the university’s initiatives extend beyond awareness to applied science. Researchers and students at ACEWATER have investigated microplastic contamination, water quality management, and community waste handling practices in parts of Osun State and beyond, providing data that now guides practical campus policies.
Reducing Single-Use Plastics on Campus
In recent years, Redeemer’s University has moved to phase out disposable plastics such as bottles, straws, and styrofoam containers in its food and event services. Water refill stations and waste segregation bins have been introduced across the university’s permanent site in Ede, encouraging the use of reusable bottles and containers. The university’s procurement office has also begun including eco-friendly clauses in contracts with external vendors and service providers, particularly caterers and cleaning companies, to ensure consistency across outsourced operations.
From Research to Real Change
Under the leadership of ACEWATER, Redeemer’s University’s environmental scientists are developing and testing low-cost wastewater filters and plastic waste management models designed to protect local water bodies from contamination. These innovations are being piloted both on campus and in surrounding communities, ensuring that the university’s sustainability practices translate into public benefit.
“Plastic waste doesn’t just affect our drains and campus environment, it threatens the very ecosystems we depend on for water and food security,” said a spokesperson from the Centre. “Our research is aimed at creating sustainable solutions that protect both people and the planet.”
Engaging the Community
Beyond campus, Redeemer’s University hosts periodic outreach events and educational programmes aimed at promoting water conservation, responsible waste disposal, and marine protection. Through campaigns led by ACEWATER and the university’s SDG Desk, students and staff work hand in hand with local communities to raise awareness about the dangers of plastic pollution and land-based activities that impact aquatic life.
The institution also collaborates with local authorities to strengthen waste management systems and promote recycling culture in the Ede community, a model of academic-community partnership for environmental change.
Commitment to a Sustainable Future
By aligning its campus operations with evidence-based research and community engagement, Redeemer’s University demonstrates that sustainability is not just a policy goal but an institutional practice. The ongoing drive to reduce plastic waste and prevent marine pollution underscores the university’s role as a thought leader and change agent in Nigeria’s higher education sector.
