Redeemer’s University: Championing Freshwater Conservation and Sustainable Aquatic Ecosystems
Redeemer’s University, Ede, through its pioneering Africa Centre of Excellence for Water and Environmental Research (ACEWATER), continues to demonstrate a strong commitment to the sustainable conservation and utilisation of aquatic ecosystems—including rivers, lakes, aquaculture systems, and groundwater resources.
In alignment with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDG 14: Life Below Water), the university actively supports and organises initiatives that protect freshwater systems, promote responsible aquaculture, and raise awareness about sustainable water resource management.
Promoting Sustainable Freshwater Management through Research and Outreach
At the heart of these initiatives lies ACEWATER’s applied research and community engagement programmes. Over the years, ACEWATER has collaborated with regional water management authorities, local communities, and other universities to host training workshops and knowledge-sharing forums on sustainable freshwater use, groundwater protection, and irrigation best practices.
These outreach programmes are free to the public, reflecting the university’s commitment to equitable access to environmental education and capacity building. The 2023 Redeemer’s University Water Management Report details several such collaborations, emphasising the university’s proactive role in improving community awareness about water security and conservation.
Furthermore, faculty-led research such as the 2025 publication “Evaluating the Feasibility of Creating a Zero-Waste Discharge Aquaculture System” showcases the institution’s innovation in sustainable fisheries and aquaculture—offering scalable solutions that minimise ecological footprint while supporting local livelihoods.
Encouraging Responsible Aquaculture and Sustainable Fisheries
Recognising that responsible fish farming and freshwater biodiversity conservation are central to sustainable food systems, Redeemer’s University’s academic and research efforts also address the ecological impacts of aquaculture.
Through field research and community partnerships, the university promotes eco-friendly aquaculture practices, efficient water reuse systems, and environmentally responsible production models that reduce nutrient discharge and protect aquatic ecosystems.
These initiatives collectively serve as informal yet powerful awareness campaigns on the importance of responsible fisheries management, addressing issues analogous to overfishing, destructive fishing practices, and water pollution in inland ecosystems.
Community Engagement for Broader Impact
Redeemer’s University’s engagement extends beyond campus boundaries. The university, in partnership with ACEWATER and the Sustainable Development Solutions Network (SDSN Nigeria), has initiated educational drives to enhance community understanding of sustainable water use, aquatic biodiversity, and climate-resilient resource management.
Through these programmes, students and researchers participate in hands-on field activities, contributing to regional development goals and the long-term sustainability of Nigeria’s freshwater systems.
A Commitment to the Future of Aquatic Sustainability
While current activities are centred primarily on freshwater ecosystems, Redeemer’s University remains dedicated to expanding its conservation and education initiatives toward broader marine and coastal systems. Its ongoing research, partnerships, and student-led outreach serve as a foundation for future collaborations addressing marine biodiversity, river basin management, and aquatic pollution control.
By combining research excellence, public education, and community collaboration, Redeemer’s University continues to play a leading role in advancing the conservation and sustainable utilisation of water resources empowering communities and safeguarding the planet for generations to come.
