Preserving and Extending Existing Ecosystems

Redeemer’s University, Ede, Osun State, stands at the forefront of advancing biodiversity conservation and the sustainable management of terrestrial and aquatic ecosystems in Nigeria. Guided by its mission of excellence in education, research, and community service, the University is actively engaged in initiatives that maintain and extend the biodiversity of plants and animals, particularly ecosystems under threat.

Through the work of the Africa Centre of Excellence for Water and Environmental Research (ACEWATER), Redeemer’s University supports interdisciplinary research that addresses the preservation of natural habitats, the sustainable use of environmental resources, and the protection of Nigeria’s ecological diversity. ACEWATER’s mandate includes promoting environmental resilience through improved understanding of freshwater and terrestrial ecosystems, linking scientific research with community-based practices for sustainable land and water use.

In collaboration with local and international partners, the University contributes to maintaining critical ecosystem balance through activities such as tree-planting drives, campus green projects, and ecological monitoring research. These efforts directly support Nigeria’s national environmental protection goals while aligning with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goal 15: Life on Land.

Faculty and postgraduate students are involved in biodiversity studies across different ecological zones in Osun State and beyond, contributing valuable data on native flora and fauna, soil quality, and habitat restoration. The University’s greenhouse projects also provide an applied platform for studying plant health, sustainable cultivation, and ecosystem restoration within controlled environments.

Educational Programmes on Ecosystems and Biodiversity

Redeemer’s University is equally committed to environmental literacy and ecosystem education. The institution integrates sustainability and conservation themes into its academic curricula, particularly within the Departments of Biological Sciences, Environmental Health, and the ACEWATER research centre. These programmes explore the interconnectedness of biodiversity, ecosystem health, and sustainable development, equipping students and local participants with practical tools for environmental management.

Through community engagement initiatives and capacity-building workshops, the University extends learning beyond the classroom to include farmers, local government representatives, and environmental organizations. These educational efforts focus on topics such as:

  1. Sustainable land management and soil conservation
  2. Biodiversity monitoring and conservation of endangered species
  3. The ecological importance of native plants and wildlife
  4. Responsible agricultural practices that support ecosystem resilience

While formal programmes targeting wild flora and fauna ecosystems are still expanding, Redeemer’s University continues to collaborate with research networks to develop future outreach initiatives that will serve both local and national communities. These initiatives are designed to strengthen public understanding of ecological balance and promote shared stewardship of Nigeria’s rich natural environment.

Sustaining a Legacy of Environmental Stewardship

Redeemer’s University’s work under SDG 15 is driven by a faith-based understanding of creation care—recognizing humanity’s responsibility to safeguard the environment. The University’s continuing investment in research innovation, environmental monitoring, and public education underscores its commitment to maintaining biodiversity and ensuring that the ecosystems of today can thrive for generations to come.

Through a combination of scientific inquiry, policy-aligned action, and community collaboration, Redeemer’s University remains a regional leader in biodiversity protection and ecosystem sustainability.
