Purpose

Redeemer’s University is committed to fostering sustainable and environmentally responsible food systems within its campus community. The purpose of this policy is to ensure that all food produced, sourced, and consumed on campus aligns with global sustainability standards and supports the long-term health of people, ecosystems, and the local economy.

Through the integration of research, education, and practice, the university aims to model a food system that promotes biodiversity, responsible production, waste minimization, and fair labor practices—thereby contributing directly to the United Nations Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) 2 (Zero Hunger) and SDG 15 (Life on Land).

Scope

This policy applies to:

  1. All food produced and distributed through campus-based agricultural initiatives such as the Redeemer’s University Greenhouse Project, teaching gardens, and demonstration plots.
  2. All contracted food vendors, caterers, and suppliers providing meals or raw food materials to the university community.
  3. Research, training, and community outreach programmes involving food production, environmental biotechnology, or agricultural innovation.

It extends to all students, staff, and third-party partners involved in food-related activities within the university.

Policy Statement

  1. Sustainable Production Practices – The university will maintain and expand campus-based sustainable farming initiatives, including its greenhouse cultivation system, designed to minimize water use, reduce pesticide dependence, and optimize organic soil and nutrient management.
  2. Local and Ethical Sourcing – Food suppliers and vendors working with the university must demonstrate responsible sourcing practices that prioritize locally produced and environmentally friendly ingredients.
  3. Fair Labor and Social Responsibility – All workers engaged in food production, both within and outside campus, must be treated fairly and in accordance with national labor and safety laws, as emphasized in the university’s Policy on Protecting Workers’ Rights in Outsourced Activities.
  4. Education and Research Integration – The university will continue to encourage research through departments such as Biological Sciences and Environmental Management, supporting innovative studies on food sustainability, greenhouse farming, and low-impact production systems.
  5. Waste Reduction and Circular Use – Food waste will be minimized through composting initiatives and partnerships that convert organic waste into soil nutrients, aligning with the university’s Waste Management and Plastic Minimization Policy.

University Responsibilities

  1. Facilities Management Unit: Oversee the implementation and monitoring of sustainable farming operations on campus, including greenhouse productivity, waste control, and soil conservation.
  2. Procurement Department: Ensure that food suppliers comply with ethical and sustainability standards before contract approval.
  3. Department of Biological Sciences: Integrate sustainable agriculture into academic curricula, laboratory practice, and student research.
  4. Environmental and Sustainability Committee: Review and report annually on progress towards campus-wide food sustainability goals.

Conclusion

Through this policy, Redeemer’s University reinforces its position as a forward-thinking, environmentally conscious academic institution. By embedding sustainability into food production, procurement, and education, the university not only enhances the quality of campus life but also contributes to Nigeria’s wider agricultural transformation agenda. In doing so, Redeemer’s University continues to embody its vision of nurturing leaders who are ethically grounded, environmentally aware, and committed to building a sustainable future for all.
