Living Wages and Fair Compensation

Redeemer’s University Commitment to Paying Living Wages and Fair Compensation for All Staff and Faculty
Redeemer’s University is committed to ensuring that all staff and faculty receive compensation that meets or exceeds the local living wage, ensuring a fair standard of living in accordance with the prevailing economic conditions. In light of the economic challenges that have affected Nigeria in recent years, the university took a significant step in 2023 to support its employees by increasing the salaries of all staff and faculty by 30%. This increase reflects the university’s dedication to improving the financial well-being of its employees and ensuring that they are compensated fairly during difficult economic times.

Salaries, Advances, and Allowances for Senior Staff (RUHSS 06/RUASS 01/RUNMESS 01 and Above)
In accordance with Redeemer’s University’s Conditions of Service for Senior Staff, the procedure for paying salaries is as follows:
- Payment of Salaries: Staff salaries are assigned according to their respective posts and follow the salary structure approved by the University Council. Salaries are typically paid on or before the end of each month directly into the employee’s bank account.
- Point of Entry on Salary Scale: Employees appointed for the first time normally begin on the lowest point of the salary scale for their position. However, in cases where the Appointments Committee finds it appropriate based on relevant experience or qualifications, new employees may be placed higher on the scale.
- Salary Advance: Employees may be granted a one-month salary advance under certain circumstances, such as during the first six months of employment or for special needs. This advance must be justified and approved by the relevant committee and repaid over three equal instalments deducted from their salary.

Designing New Buildings with Water Efficiency in Mind:
For all new construction projects at Redeemer’s University, sustainable building practices are embedded in the design phase to ensure that water conservation is a primary consideration. This includes:
- Rainwater Harvesting Systems: New buildings are equipped with rainwater harvesting systems that collect and store rainwater from rooftops. This harvested water is treated and used for landscaping, flushing toilets, and other non-potable uses, significantly reducing the reliance on the municipal water supply. Rainwater harvesting is especially useful in maintaining green spaces and gardens during dry periods.
- Water-Sensitive Urban Design (WSUD): The university is integrating water-sensitive urban design principles in the construction of new buildings and surrounding landscapes. This involves the strategic placement of permeable surfaces, drainage systems, and retention basins that allow for the natural infiltration and reuse of rainwater, reducing runoff and promoting groundwater recharge.
- Water-Efficient Appliances and Fixtures: New buildings are equipped with state-of-the-art, water-efficient appliances, including dishwashers and washing machines, that use significantly less water than standard models. All fixtures such as taps, showers, and toilets in these new facilities are chosen for their high efficiency and minimal water use.
- Smart Water Management Systems: To monitor and optimize water use in real-time, smart water management systems are installed in new buildings. These systems track water consumption, detect leaks, and automatically adjust water flow based on demand, ensuring that no water is wasted. Data from these systems is used to refine water conservation strategies across campus.

Salaries and Wages for Junior Staff (RUHSS 05/RUNHESS 05 and Below)
The salary structure for junior staff at Redeemer’s University is similarly designed to ensure fair wages for all employees:
- Casual/Contract Employment Wages: Daily-rated staff are compensated according to the approved rates for their specific grades.
- Other Employment Grades: Salaries for employees in other grades are determined by their position within the junior staff scheme of service.
- Point of Entry on Salary Scale: Like senior staff, junior employees typically start on the lowest point of the university’s salary scale for their position, though any errors in placement can be corrected by the Appointments and Promotions Committee.
- Salary Advances: Junior staff may also receive salary advances under similar guidelines as senior staff, with approval from the appropriate committee and repayment in three equal instalments.
- Ensuring a Living Wage for All Employees Redeemer’s University’s dedication to its staff goes beyond just meeting the minimum salary requirements. The 2023 salary increase of 30% for all staff and faculty highlights the university’s proactive approach in addressing economic hardships and ensuring that all employees are compensated in a way that allows them to maintain a decent standard of living. This increase ensures that all employees earn at least the local living wage, which is crucial in supporting their financial stability and overall well-being.
